The Unplugged Tribute to Elvis Makes its Debut!
One of the Festival highlights was a new addition to the program and one that had Festival organisers buzzing with excitement. The inaugural Unplugged Tribute to Elvis was an astonishing success showcasing a more individual approach to honouring the songs that made a King!
With contestants from all over the country, there was a wide variety of acts, and all had their eye on the prize. And what a prize! A cherry-red Hagstrom Super Viking – a modern version of a guitar Elvis actually played during the ’68 Comeback Special – from the Australian distributors – Pro Music Australia.
There was a sousaphone player from WA, a tenro singer DJ with half a tambourine from Tassie, an accordion player, competing against her own son on acoustic guitar, and a slow and haunting piano rendition of ‘Don’t be Cruel’ just to name a few. Playing to a park with over 20,000 spectators, the contestents bravely expressed their own unique take on a song that Elvis made famous. Judges were looking for originality, and particularly – no jumpsuits!
